Have you ever heard that your thoughts and feelings are the weather, and you are the sky? I revisited this concept of a ‘blue sky’ this morning, when I was doing some mindfulness exercises on the Headspace app.
The concept is that when everything is going well and your mind is calm, your mind is a bright blue sky, and the few clouds that you see don’t bother you. However, when things get stressful and when dark times come, your mind can become dark and stormy. It might be filled with dark clouds, thunder and lightning. You might try to run away, or you might try to struggle, but the concept that Headspace was trying to convey was the fact that behind the dark clouds and thunder is a bright blue sky, that is always there.
The thoughts and feelings and sensations that you have sit on top of this this blue sky, and they can distract you. The idea is that the blue sky is always there, and if you simply let your thoughts be, they can part to reveal the blue sky behind.
It is not about ‘creating’ a blue sky in your mind, it is simply just observing it to be there, and to finding what is always there.
