The second thing that came out of the conversation with my psychologist friend today was a bit of professional development.
I told her about my woes regarding underwhelming degrees of change in my psychosocial support work. She said that during the supervision process of practising psychologists one of the first things that they teach is not to expect change. Or that change in psychological work can be imperceptible on some occasions. To basically learn not to get caught up in wanting to SEE CHANGE in people.
She said that it really depends on the client, and that some people are very able to change a lot and other people are not so capable of changing that much.
Gayle said something similar when she said ‘however growth looks like for them’.
I probably need to process that a bit more, because my initial instinct is to just decide it is not the role for me. It feels rather frustrating to be so ineffective. Maybe I need to see the value of what I do in different ways.
